1939 Battle of Westerplatte
On September 1, 1939, the German battleship Schleswig-Holstein opens fire on the Polish garrison stationed on the Westerplatte peninsula. As the attack begins, the remote outpost becomes the site of one of the first clashes of World War II, placing the soldiers at Westerplatte at the center of a conflict that is about to engulf Europe.
