Beatrice Prior and Tobias Eaton leave the safety and limits of the fence behind to face the unknown world beyond it. Their move into unfamiliar territory quickly brings them under the control of a mysterious organization called the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, which places them in protective custody as they confront a larger reality outside the boundaries they once knew.
