Michael Dorsey is a struggling, out-of-work actor who cannot seem to land a role. In secret, he creates a female alter ego, Dorothy Michaels, and auditions for a part on a trashy daytime hospital soap. The plan works, but his new identity brings unexpected complications as Dorothy becomes a feminist icon and Michael finds himself caught in a romantic tangle.
