In 1934 Paris, a struggling female soprano is desperate for work when she takes on an unusual act: posing as a man who performs as a female impersonator. The role finally gives her a chance to earn a living onstage, but the deception brings complications offstage, especially when a visiting Chicago gangster finds himself drawn to the performer he believes is male.
