In 1950s East London, young nurse Jenny Lee begins life and work as a midwife in the deprived Poplar district, serving a community in London’s desperately poor East End. Living alongside the nuns of the Order of St. Raymond of Nonnatus, she is introduced to the daily realities of childbirth, care, faith, and poverty through the lives of the women, families, and midwives around her.
